NYC School HelpJoyce Szuflita of NYC School Help loves to go to stoop sales in Brooklyn.

Business Name
NYC School Help

Business Description
I help Brooklyn families with the school search, public and private, nursery school through high school. If you are thinking of relocating to Brooklyn I can give you insight and information on appropriate neighborhood schools and the parenting culture of Brooklyn.

Best thing about working for yourself?
I love being able to set my own schedule and manage my day in a hundred different ways.

Worst thing about working for yourself?
I love what I am doing so much that I find it hard to break away and maintain a balance between work and home. Because my office is in my home, my family regularly drags me from the computer kicking and screaming.

Why did you start your business?
I had a long and successful career in show business that had reached a plateau. I felt that I was stagnating and wanted a challenge. I am using a whole different skill set in my school consulting business and it is thrilling to discover new abilities that I never knew that I had.

When did you start to think of yourself as an entrepreneur?
I have always thought of myself as an entrepreneur. It is just lately that other people get it.

How do you relax?
I love to go to stoop sales in Brooklyn with my husband. We have a constant rotation of unusual items coming in and going out of the house (when we hold our stoop sales). I recently purchased a custom pool cue, a stuffed bull frog and a set of crystal goblets. Every day is full of treasures that cost a dollar.

What is something that you are known for?
Customer service is everything.

What 5 things would you never like to be without?
My family, my bracelets, my sense of humor, a book – any book, my keys

What’s a business that you think is interesting or inspiring?
I think that Galia Gichon’s Down to Earth Finance is offering a great service in a perfect way.

Who is a person that inspires you?
My sister-in-law took a degree in theatre from a small state college and with intelligence, hard work and integrity has made her way to upper management in the Gates Foundation. She inspires my daughters (as I hope that I do) to follow your talent and your interests and leave other people’s expectations behind.
