MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: KATIE KARLOVITZ, on speaking terms
September 21, 3-5pm
RSVP:
igcrsvp@gmail.com with KARLOVITZ in the subject line.
Katie Karlovitz of On Speaking Terms notes that the recent on/camera “brain freeze” of Arizona governor Jan Brewer is a good example of what not to do in an interview or public presentation. Credibility and poise go hand in hand, so in order to be poised in public you’ve got to prepare yourself…for just about anything.

Unfortunately, most people aren’t taught how to approach the moments that can really make a difference to their public image— speaking up at just the right moment in a meeting, introducing yourself to someone over the phone, or being asked to go on camera to represent your company in a news program— are all chances to build a good reputation for yourself. Visibility is a crucial part of leadership and promotion.

Katie Karlovitz will review various scenarios that call for people to be comfortable, confident and genuine in public. She believes it’s time to “ditch the elevator pitch” and start tuning in to how people really think and feel about their work, and how they can express it in ways that are interesting and concise. She’ll include lively examples of some of her clients’ successes, and tips you’ll be able to utilize immediately. All levels of presenting expertise are welcome…there’s something for everyone, including how to structure a message, making small talk at business gatherings, working with PowerPoint, and managing stage fright.

Let’s have a collaborative discussion about where you are now, what product and services might complement your work, and how you can make that happen. We have all gone through one of the worst recessions in decades and unemployment is at an all time high. This reality highlights the importance of having more than one source of income and a need to change the way we work. Diversifying our offerings is the starting point.

Our recent brush with the copycat from Ireland has sparked quite a bit of conversation within the membership and it seems that unfortunately many of us have been the victims of idea theft at one point or another. Yet drawing inspiration from the marketplace is not only inevitable but is an important part of good entrepreneurship. So where do you draw the line? And how do you properly handle the imitation or adaption of your ideas?

During this discussion group we are going to talk about:

  • Ways to handle instances of idea theft
  • How to respond to blind requests for business information
  • Your own approach to sharing ideas and imitation
  • The best ways to reach out to others when you’re looking for some behind the scenes data

Come with questions and ideas. As always, this promises to be a lively discussion!
