I was recently reminded of how important this tip is while taking a trip to Berlin last month.  I had a year of challenges both business/personal and had procrastinated on planning any travel for myself.  It had been one more “thing to do” and I wasn’t making myself a priority. In turn my creative soul was feeling pretty BLAH! Thanks to a great photographer friend and one too many sakes, we spontaneously booked a trip to Berlin for a full week to refresh our perspective.  The second I stepped foot in the JFK departure terminal I was already full of inspiration- I was taking pictures as we waited for our plane and more importantly SEEING images again with my soul.  What was happening to me?  Almost immediately without needing to “see” from a work or client perspective my personal inspiration soared!  We spent our travel days mostly without an agenda, just walking and shooting- total indulgence.  We had 1 agenda item for the week which was to visit the Helmet Newton Foundation, a museum dedicated to the work of my favorite photographer.  We planned that for the middle of the trip and it was phenomenal,  I left the exhibit so inspired I couldn’t even form words- me speechless?  Unprecedented.  As I continued to take pictures for the rest of the trip I had a sense of finding beauty in everything I saw.   When I came home I was filled with delight and a inspiration for my work!  A month later and I’m still carrying that wonderment with me today while I walk the streets of my own city.  Travel- I needed it and it was there for the taking.

I couldn’t agree more Lori, traveling definitely gives one a new perspective, and what a luxury it is to “look” for oneself and not for a client or project. I feel almost guilty doing this sometimes, but remember, it’s just as effective to take a break as it is to plow through the to-do list. Berlin’s a great place to do this, so much inspiration there.
