Business Karma

The maxim ‘do onto others’ has been lolling around my brain since I enthusiastically agreed to contribute to In Good Company’s 100 Best Business Tips.  I have always been a big believer in sharing resources and leads with others.  The combination of being an information purveyor and the inability to keep my mouth shut has on occasion been a detriment – note to self, stop suggesting to others of equal talent and skill to apply for same job opportunities as me.  But, I really can’t help myself – assisting, nurturing and guiding one another is crucial to community building.  And without developing a network of colleagues and associates, your success and may be financial, but not fruitful.

I am not suggesting swapping industry trade secrets, but being of service to a business adversary can be the foundation of a future collaboration or partnership.  I recently met an In Good Company member who offers a very similar service to apartmentjeanie, I could have easily considered her competition and promptly dismissed her, but instead I approached her, asking questions about her amenities and suggested resources that would improve her business model.  She in turn emailed me a press opportunity.

However, exercising good business karma isn’t completely altruistic.  The more information you parcel out through direct interactions or social media outlets will establish you as an authority.  And being an expert in the field will help you grow your company, allowing you to foster new relationships and develop a larger audience.

Just as in life, practicing ‘reap what you sow’ should guarantee a big bounty of business karma.
