Between the daily operations and the usual business highs and lows it is easy to forget why you started the business in the first place.Amy and Adelaide’s tip to: “remember why you started your business” really resonated with me because I think going back to the original ‘spark’ that created Thinking Caps helps me continually improve my caliber of work and also get excited about the next opportunities for the company. When I do lose sight of why I first started tutoring I feel like an island of daily chores that is not attached to a bigger purpose. Not only do my work and morale suffer, but I have a hard time thinking ahead and planning the next steps for Thinking Caps.

In the days and weeks when I feel that I am just caught up in the daily affairs, I have to remind myself why I started the business. I find that writing down the reminder with a few bullets on what I’ve accomplished so far and what types of success I look forward to: this helps me stay energized about my work and not get lost in the quagmire of daily tasks. I usually draft a pyramid-shaped list of my goals that lead up to the mission that started Thinking Caps. Whenever I am feeling overwhelmed I return to my list for inspiration. As soon as I am reminded about the students we work with and the wonderful families we’ve met along the way, I feel ready to conquer any challenges and take advantage of opportunities. Having a ritual reminder of why I started Thinking Caps is extremely helpful for me to continually improve my work, stick to what we believe in, and help us do our job of helping students become independent and happy learners.
